ABBA SELF HELP GROUP
FreeKenya ventured into Homabay County as soon as it was registered and partnered up with Abba Self Help Group. Here FKF was able to facilitate the creation of a Windmill made from recycled material. This helped tackle the big issue of access to water for domestic use. The windmills presence subsequently opened up the area around Abba to more development they would sell the water to the community , FKF facilitated the creation of a farmer field school that was used to feed the school for the vulnerable that was started by Abba. The farmer field school also served as a demonstration site for the locals around.
Right now Abba has grown with a fully functioning primary school for the vulnerable. They were also funded by another organization with a clinic.
NYAMTHOI, AZEDASY AND MESOPOTAMIA FARMER GROUPS
In Kisumu, we have worked with various farmer groups mostly located around Nyalenda and Nyamasaria areas where its quite swampy and infested with hippos which live by the adjacent lake.
We have trained these farmers on innovative ways to conduct agribusiness especially is such hot weather conditions. They were also taken through A-F Training that basically tackled Agribusiness, Basic life and Communication Skills, Computer Literacy, Development, Entrepreneurship and Financial Management. After these training, were embarked on connecting their produce to the markets targeting supermarkets and hotels and were successful in the linkage. this saw them supplying high end hotels like Sovereign Hotel , The Vic Hotel ,Dunga Hill Camp and Roan Rooftop Restaurant.
MAJI UHAI SHAMBA PESA PROJECT
This project was funded by a Dutch organization called Koorenzaye. This project is based in Oyugis and FreeKenya Foundation is tasked with creating two Community Resource Centres in Ongamo and Ranyenya communities. The aim of this project is to ensure that the communities are able to have sustainable livelihoods with Food on the Plate and Money in the Pocket. The first phase of the project just ended and this saw the transformation of these two communities because first they were empowered with other life changing skills like change of mindset and after the six months both communities had functional resource centres where by the Group Resource Persons who weretrained by FKF would train farmers attached to them. This made the adoption of the innovative ways of agribusiness way easy. Both communities confessed to being ignorant to the fact that some of the crops FKF introduced could actually grow in Oyugis and now they save money as they don’t buy vegetables from out of town but are actually selling vegetables to their neighbors.
JUNIOR FARMER FIELD SCHOOL
Many primary schools in Kenya do not offer feeding programs yet a large percentage of the schools have high populations of most vulnerable children. The most vulnerable children come from the poorest families and, in Kenya, many of them are HIV/AIDS orphans. They consider themselves to be fortunate if they are given one meal per day to eat. The lack of food negatively impacts the attention span of the child and the ability of the child to learn is minimized. The lack of food also negatively impacts the child’s physical and emotional growth and leaves the child more prone to constant illness.
FreeKenya Foundation was approached by Seeds of Life to facilitate the creation of a Junior Farmer Field School.
Tiengre Primay School is located in Kisumu County, Kenya. The school has a student population of 630 primary school children and 168 nursery school children, the majority of which are vulnerable due to extreme poverty in the area and early death of parents. These children face hunger and food insecurity on a regular basis, many of them on a daily basis.at the moment FKF has been working with the Community Resource Persons selected by the PTA Of Tie’ngre Community liasing with the school. They were trained oninnovative ways of growing ccrops and they were empowered with other life changing skills like change of mindset.
